Board Recognizes National Women’s History Month and Equal Pay Day
Dane County, Wisconsin — Tonight, the Dane County Board of Supervisors officially recognized March as National Women’s History Month and March 25th as Equal Pay Day.
Woman's History Month is a time to reflect on the contributions women have made throughout history, and recognize the ongoing work needed for gender equality. 2024 RES-368 highlights the outstanding achievements of Dane County leaders Milele Chikasa Anana, Ellen Bravo, Carin Clauss, and Lucía Nuñez.
March 25th is Equal Pay Day, marking how far into the next year women must work to match the median income men earned the previous year. On average, white women earn 82 cents for every dollar earned by men, with Black and Latina women earning 66.5 and 57.5 cents, respectively. This pay gap creates long-term financial disadvantages, affecting earnings, benefits, and generational wealth. The Dane County Board was joined by Dr. Christina Outlay, Executive Director of Maydm.
"We thank the Dane County Board of Supervisors for recognizing Women's History Month and addressing pay inequality," said Dr. Christina Outlaym, Executive Director at Maydm. "We focus on exposing youth to the STEM fields where women are underrepresented overall and earn less than men. At Maydm, 60% of our program participants are girls, and we want them to have equal opportunities and pay in their future careers.
“Women’s History Month is an opportunity to celebrate the Dane County trailblazers who have shaped our community, acknowledge the challenges that remain, and renew our commitment to eliminate barriers to gender equality,” said Dane County Board Chair Patrick Miles.
"At a time when the rights and freedoms that women have fought and died for are under attack it is important to recognize our history, present, and future in Dane County,” said Supervisor Analiese Eicher. “While women's history month and women's equal pay day are opportunities to highlight these achievements and efforts, living our values when it comes to equality and equity is a daily practice and a challenge that we all must rise to."
